How remapping works on a diesel BMW 5 Series
Nothing is bolted on in a diesel remap. The ECU's stored maps for injection quantity, rail pressure and turbo boost are rewritten within safe limits, and because diesels make power through torque, that is where the improvement is most obvious.
How the BMW 525d 177 (E60) compares
Of the 17 diesel 5 Series engines in our data, this one comes 9th for power gain, which is 2 bhp below the 5 Series diesel average of 37 bhp.
Across our whole catalogue the average diesel remap adds 34 bhp and 73 Nm, so this engine's 35 bhp and 75 Nm sits at or above that benchmark.
